Monday, May 31, 2010 – Happy Memorial Day!

Palm Springs, CA – More than thirty talented baseball players arrived bright and early to Palm Springs Stadium on a beautiful Memorial Day morning Monday to attend an open tryout for the Palm Springs POWER.  The early morning appearance paid off for four of the players that tried out as the POWER have invited Zack Haley, Nathaniel Guerra, Anthony Virga, and Ismael Gutierrez to join their roster.

Haley, a 5’9”, 160 lb. second baseman, last attended Yavapai College where he was an Academic All-American with a 3.77 GPA.  The Prescott, Arizona native is a Criminal Justice major and will be transferring as a junior to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia this fall.

Guerra is a 5’7”, 175 lb. infielder with experience at second and third base.  He attends Mount San Jacinto College.  Currently residing in Moreno Valley, California, Guerra played his high school ball at Vista del Lago.

Virga was a reserve player for the POWER last season and has returned again after making the team at Monday’s open tryout.  Standing at 5’10”, 185 lbs., Virga will again be a utility player for first-year POWER manager Tom Gamboa’s team.  Virga currently resides in Palm Springs, California but played his high school ball for Joshua Springs.

Gutierrez is another former POWER player who has made his return to the roster this season after last playing for the 2008 squad.  Gutierrez is a 6’1”, 210 lb. pitcher who tosses for Culver-Stockton College and previously played for College of the Desert.  Gutierrez played for Indio High School and also currently resides in Indio, California.

After the tryout, Palm Springs POWER Manager Tom Gamboa said, “I can’t wait to get these players out on the practice field tomorrow.  We have a strong roster this season and we have high expectations of ourselves.”

The SoCal Cardinals, also of the SCCBA (Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association), signed three players from Monday morning’s open tryout as well.  The three newest members to the SoCal Cardinals’ roster are catcher/outfielder Jace Fanner (Cal State – Monterey Bay), outfielder/pitcher Jeriel Waller (San Diego Mesa College), and pitcher Spencer Tate (Cal State – San Bernardino).
